How can I inspect the surface charges and composition of my derived composite adsorbent sheet for heavy metal removal?
For composition, you should go for XPS and XRD analysis. In case of surface charge, You should conduct an experiment for determining the zero point charge of the material where you have to take a batch of buffer solutions with various pH ranging from acid to base then add a required amount of adsorbent into the solutions. After shaking for 24 hours you have to measure the final pH of the solutions and then plot a graph based on Initial pH Vs Final pH. Then you will find a point where both the curves cross each other which is called as Zero point charge that means at that point the surface charge of the material is neutral. If the zero point charge of a material is above 7, it suggests that the surface of the material tends to be negatively charged at neutral pH values. This can occur when the surface has more hydroxyl groups or other negatively charged functional groups than positively charged groups. This can imply that the material may exhibit basic characteristics. Similarly, if the zero point charge of a material is below 7, it suggests that the surface of the material tends to be positively charged at neutral pH values which can imply that the material may exhibit acidic characteristics.
Now, I am working in the lab for heavy metal removal by activated carbon composite adsorbent. I need some information:
1. Adsorbent mixing time with a known conc of heavy metal solution?
2. After mixing, how can i collect treated water for AAS test? filtration, or collecting the water from the upper surface.
For surface charge analysis, you need to do the zeta potential analysis of your composite.
