I'm so glad you asked this question. This is something that I did not know anything about much earlier in my career. We often need several mentors for different parts of our work (e.g. research, teaching). I would suggest finding someone you admire and who is in the position that you might like to be in the future. Usually this person has a similar career trajectory. If it is someone at your university that you do not know, you could get someone you do know to introduce you. I would also attend national conferences in your field and approach people there. I hope this helps! Tara
ok dear, how are you, my name is walelgn dilnesa, i am teaching in debremarkos university, now doing a research work in several aras, if she is intersting to join with me please send your email and can contact in a prolonged time. my email is [email protected]
I think Tara Tietjen-Smith 's response makes sense as you need someone who is familiar with your research, which you have not told us about, and who is close by or easily accessible to provide immediate support when needed, but not necessarily f2f. I suggest you start looking within your own institution first.
Ideally, your thesis supervisor should be a good mentor. My recommendation is that you look for those mentor qualities in the chosen person, even if your search is a little longer.
Attached is an interesting article on the qualities of academic mentors from nature magazine:

At CIC energiGUNE we are going to start training for mentors and mentees because we think it is crucial for the successful supervision of our doctoral students.
Also attached is an updated article where we compile the desired characteristics of the mentor (teaching skills, communication skills, listening skills...).
Find an Academic Mentor via an Institutional Scheme
Research intensive universities usually have a formal list of faculty members willing to be mentors. But it's your responsibility to be proactive. Invest time in finding a good mentor who can show you the most effective ways to build a successful academic career.
