Vehicle roll-over is of major concern particularly for SUVs. The NHTSA has developed a NCAP rollover rating system for assessing the propensity of SUVs to roll over. While the procedure adopted in carrying out the NCAP rollover test is carefully designed to avoid endangering life there is, nevertheless, some risk of actual rollover occurring, thus endangering life. The aim of this project is to develop a simulation of the NHTSA’s NCAP dynamic rollover resistance test for carrying out computer simulation of this test during the development stages of a new vehicle to assess it for susceptibility to rollover and therefore make necessary modifications if necessary. This will ensure that the vehicle stands a good chance of doing well in this assessment when it is put through the physical test. It is envisaged that the simulation will be based on a Matlab/Simulink™ model.

You seem to be asking two questions: Can you predict roll-overs in vehicles; and can you simulate structural survivability in a roll-over. Both, I believe are relatively easy to model. First, from airplanes to railroad cars (including trucks and automobiles) it has been possible (if not essential) to calculate the exact center of gravity in vehicles both loaded and empty for years. With that information, it is easy to model the forces acting on the vehicle at different speeds and in different orientations (around a curve, skidding sideways, etc.) and know pretty accurately at what point the horizontal forces on the center of gravity will overcome the ground friction and weight keeping the vehicle mostly upright. The old Landrover Series I, II, IIa, and III trucks conquered this with a heavy steel chassis and an aluminum body and Jeep had to conquer the problem by lowering the center of gravity and widening the wheel base. The second challenge has been met from vehicles from race cars to earthmoving equipment by structural roll cages. Volvo mastered this in automobiles 70 years ago, and my wife (the driver) and I survived rolling over in a 1958 Volvo PV444 almost 50 years ago, with the help of on-lookers pushed it back on its wheels, and drove another 450 miles that night with three broken engine mounts for a job interview in the morning.
