I have plasma sprayed red mud composite coatings on mild steel substrate. The substrate is about 1 cm diameter and 3 mm thick. I want to know how can I determine the surface roughness profile. Which one would be a suitable instrument to determine it. Whether AFM or Surface profile meter. In AFM which operating mode should be implemented. Please help.

So I have some bias here, but really it will depend on the sort of resolution you are looking to measure. AFM is a good choice if the surface roughness is on nanometer scale, but surface profilometers like OSP are good if the roughness is on the micron scale. Another factor influencing the choice could be what size area you are looking to measure. If you wanted to measure the full 1 cm substrate you could achieve this easily, and quickly with a profilometer.

AFM cant be implemented since as sprayed plasma coatings will have higher roughness. The probe of AFM could break down. To do this, you need to carefully provide the surface finish and then proceed. I feel profilometer is the best option.

I suggest you to use Surface texture analyser (profilometer) to measure roughness.
