you might try inclusion complex formation with phenolphthalein. When this is complexed with beta-cyclodextrin the colour is lost. The inclusion is not formed with starch.
As alternative you may hydrolyze the starch enzymatically using amyloglucosidase and isoamylase (both from Megazyme) which convert starch into glucose, while they cannot degrade cyclodextrins.
