I'm conducting mark-recapture using noninvasive genetic sampling and started my sampling session during parturition for deer. Does anyone have any experience in correcting for this? I would love to be able to maintain my closed-capture model since the population I'm working on resides on an island and would like to account for possible misidentification in my model.
This is a question about a question. What is the question that your research is trying to answer? Also, a lot of deer can swim quite well, so exactly how isolated is the island?
I assume the non-invasive genetic sampling is from dung/pellets? If you can identify pellets of newborn deer (based on size??), leave them out of the analysis, so that your estimates will pertain to older individuals only. Since you want to use closed models, I am guessing you want to get at density/abundance, right?

Thank you for your attention to my work. I recommend you to use a principal component analysis (PCA) housed in free software XLSTAT. This is free software for a test a month once installed on your computer. It’s a form of excel very advanced.
