How can I chose a correct structural index, and Windows size in an Euler déconvolution results?

Hello!

The main question I have is, how do I determine the Euler deconvolution parameters (SI, Wind size, Tolerence..) and how can i verify the results obtained. Im mainly looking to locate deep faults and contacts for an area of (35km*35km). any idea what can be some good values to start with?

Dear Mohammed Jalal Tazi: Your question is interesting, but you need to know before, you may respond before the application of Euler´s method, some issues about your objectives: As you explain, “I´m mainly looking to locate deep faults and contacts for an area of (35km*35km)”; then, the next factors should be crucial when you are trying by Euler to estimate the depth and geometries of the source:

If you have deep sources, you will return long wavelengths, and therefore,

The size of the Euler´s window deconvolution will only differentiate sources that are shallower than twice this window size.

Consequently, a window size bigger will return the deeper sources.

On the other hand: an increasing window size will have two undesirable effects on your interpretation:

If the window is too large, it will potentially detect multiple sources in a single window which will give erroneous results.

It will contain more cells and will therefore slow the calculation.

As an alternative to increasing the window size, increase the grid cell size which will automatically create a larger window.

An alternative technique would be to apply a low-pass filter to the original dataset before running Euler deconvolution as it will remove high-frequency data which will, in turn, reduce the shallow solutions (consider using upward continuation, cosine roll-off, or Butterworth residual filters).

To ensure that deep sources are considered, make sure that the Maximum Distance parameter, the distance from the center of the window to the source, is large enough to encompass the desired solutions. A variable of ‘0’ represents an infinite distance.

Following the Alan Reid answer in RG: “Euler deconvolution as implemented in Geosoft is only strictly correct for a very limited range of magnetic structures. Point sources (dipoles), line sources (pipelines and fences), thin sheet edges (like thin dykes), VERY thick contacts, or normal (dip-slip) faults with great depth extent. All these have integer SIs. Non-integer SI's arise because we sometimes try to cheat and apply the method to other body types. Euler cannot rely on the thick contacts. Only for infinite ones. This is your problem here. If the depth to bottom is more than (say) 10 times depth to top, you can use SI=0 and get the top. This Euler implementation can't give you the bottom… Euler can be applied to small, engineering scales or large regional scales as long as you remember and honor point 1. above. You just use a bigger window. But point 1 is a major barrier because the most useful structure (the thick contact) doesn't work well with this implementation.”
