I am trying to calculate surface area of granular activated carbon using adsorption isotherm data of phenol. In literature they do it with methylene blue dye but not with phenol. Is it necessary to do adsorption isotherms for MB for determination of surface area of any adsorbent?

the answer depends on your carbon :-)
If it is essentially mesoporous you can use many different substances for adsorption in the liquid phase. Of course you will need data on phenol (size of the adsorbed molecule,..) in order to estimate an adsorption surface. And you have to be sure the phenol is purely physisorbed (i.e. your carbon presents few surface groups such as carboxyl groups), otherwise your basic assumption of monolayer coverage will not be correct!
