Currently I am conducting a study to compare between two groups of students about their diabetes knowledge. I used a scale consists of 40 items that classified into eight factors. These eight factors, encompassing diabetes general knowledge (8 items), diabetes risk factor (3 items), diabetes symptoms (3 items), diabetes diagnosis (4 items), diabetes treatment (10 items), diabetes complications (0-4 items), and diabetes diet and exercise (5 items). The response options were yes, no or I do not know. The respondents were awarded one point for each correct response and zero for each wrong and I do not know answers because they were considered wrong answers.
I can calculate the percentages for the correct answers for each item but I found difficulty calculating such measures for the sub-scales.

Your work seems to be very interesting..
If its only percentage you are looking for, here is my suggestion:
You have 8 factors (sub scales), create a new variable for each factor using "compute" an add up items (variables) within each factor. You will have 8 new variables representing your factors. Then calculate percentages using descriptive analysis.
