I am currently analyzing data for my master's thesis.
One question was a ranking question where participants could rank 4 different options based on their perceived effectiveness.
In SPSS I now have 4 different variables for each participant.
Variable 1 shows the first ranked options, variable 2 the second-ranked options, etc..
How can I analyze this Data, to see which option was overall perceived as most effective, second effective, third effective, and least effective?

This sounds like one of those situations wherein it would have been a great idea to figure out how best to arrange the logic of the questionnaire to match with your analytic goals before proceeding with data collection!
In any event, if the purpose is to order the four choices, then, here's a brute force way to accomplish that goal.
1. Run frequencies (analyze/descriptive statistics/frequencies) on each of the four option variables in spss.
2. Create a table in spss or excel (or whatever worksheet you like), that has:
(a) one column with the four options that people were considering;
(b) a second column showing how many times that option was selected as the #1 choice by your sample;
(c) a third column showing how many times that option was selected as the #2 choice by your sample;
(d) a fourth column...#3 choice
(e) a fifth column...#4 choice
3. If you're using spss, then compute a total choice score as 4*column 2 + 3 * column 3 + 2 * column 2 + column 1.
The values of these total choice scores will now show you the overall preference for your sample (when arranged from highest overall total to lowest overall total).
