Hello,
I'm really confused about the analysis of my survey data for my master thesis.
My research topic is about different goal levels. I conducted a small survey in line with the paper of Heath, Larrick, Wu: "Goals as Reference Points". They just simply gave people a situational problem and asked how they think the person would behave (e.g. who would be willing to show more effort: the one being above the goal and one being below the goal). I adapted a few problems to a tiered goal approach where people practically have the same overall goal but also an additional lower goal that is accepted. I wanted to test if this has the same effect on people and whether they will also take the lower goal as a reference point.
Lower goal: r_l
Higher goal: r_h
One example:
Peter is above r_l and Lukas is below r_l but they are both the same amount away from r_h.
Who is more willing to increase their effort by one unit?
Heath et al conducted a chi square test but I'm confused how I can apply this to my problem.
For example in my survey participants had three response options and responded with:
Peter: 18 (16%)
Lukas: 91 (79%)
Both equally: 6 (5%)
Here I would argue that the null hypothesis that people only focus on r_h seems to not hold. People seem to focus more on r_l as their reference point.
What kind of statistic test would work here?
I'm super confused and would really appreciate any help!!!
