I am working on generating ultrasound standing wave using COMSOL. In my COMSOL simulation, my model has three domains: i.e. a transducer, a PMMA wall and a fluid domain.
The transducer is attached directly to the PMMA without any glue layer or sort. This is kind of advantageous since we won't have any lessening of acoustic energy due to the additional glue layer. However, there will be acoustic interference from the direct attachment of the transducer. The transducer has transverse strip of electrode, one electrode will be driven with an electric signal and the other electrode will be grounded completely. Hence, the excitation of the transducer will put stresses on the wall of the PMMA which would cause acoustic wave field to form in the fluid domain. At first, the waves are travelling waves, ones it experiences a phase shift at the end of the wall, its gets reflected. From there on, ultrasonic standing wave field forms from the superposition of the reflected and incidence acoustic wave field.
The ultrasonic standing wave field will then seperate the suspended particles in the fluid domain into nodal planes [this depends on the acoustic factor of the suspended particles, generally, those that are solid particles have positive acoustic factor go to nodal planes while oil droplets have negative acoustic factor go to antinodal planes]
