I am working on patch antenna analysis using FDTD. I need to design a two element rectangular patch antenna array and would like to reduce the coupling between the two which would in turn improve other radiation parameters. Help or guidance in the right direction will be appreciated. Thank you.
EBG structures suppress surface waves and thus mutual coupling between antennas in arrays.
So EBG can be placed in between antennas to reduce mutual coupling.
Basically, EBG structures enhance gain and efficiency by suppressing surface waves.
For better Isolation, make use of slots or specially designed structures on ground layer.
Please look at this paper: "Isolation Enhancement in a Dual Port Antenna".
Basically, There is two types of EBG :
1- mushroom like (need vias to connect cells to ground)
2- Uni palnar EBG (just cells inserted between the antenna elements with any shape but with equal separation).
I suggest to you the second type.
