Hello, I am M.A. Candidate in Applied Linguistics in Iran where we have EFL situation. I am interested in Discourse Analysis and I want to write my M.A. thesis on this topic. I would like to receive some topics from you respected scholars, about application of discourse analysis in classroom or improving students writing.
By the way, I am also interested in doing quantitative research. Is there some topics related to discourse analysis in which I can do quantitative research too rather purely qualitative research?

Farzad - the best way to select a dissertation topic is to look back on your own coursework and consider what you think were the most interesting topics. Then review the literature (which maybe you have already done in your classes) and decide what are the unanswered questions in the area you have selected. This will help you identify a specific "problem" that you will enjoy reserching.

One of the most prevalent techniques aiming to investigate the classroom dynamism is observational research focusing on the interactional patterns materializing the classroom processes. More recently, discourse analysis based classroom research addressing such issues as teacher talk, student talk, interaction patterns between learners and between the teacher and learners, wait time, patterns of feedback, etc. have increasingly become important. In this approach, the researcher needs to record data, transcribe the data based on carefully designed coding systems , analyze and interpret the obtained data in order to fathom out the mysteries overshadowing b EFL/ESL classroom interactions. Notably, reviewing some the works written by Rod Ellis (from 2000 to the present) can hopefully shed more light on what you are looking for.
