There is a zone in all soil-water characteristics curves (SWCC) that ranges from full saturation to the air entry value. This zone is called the "boundary effect stage" in the literature. The slope of the SWCC curve in this zone is not zero (i.e. it shows a slight desaturation).

Since the capillary suction in this range is less than the air entry value, how can this small desaturation be explained?
