In some cultures, collaboration in simple projects is encouraged early on from school age; in some other cultures it is not considered too important to adapt it into the curriculum. Agreed. Investigative projects are generally started in primary school, but are individual. Group projects are generally started only in final year of university. Marks for the degree of collaboration are almost never given. It requires the team members to report confidentially the degree of collaboration of the other members*. Postgrad research is always individual (to ensure there is no freeriding taking place.) But, research projects need not be the only vehicle to teach collaboration. Definitely group work is a big achievement. Leadership and believing that group work will do an achievement. I have a team work in Egypt and USA focused to publish work interest worldwide in food science. We have working in a project since 2.5 years, finally our project accepted to publish in top journal in food science. Team work as I said needs a leader, patience, accepting failure sometime and back again to benefit from mistakes. Continuity is a successful measure for your group work.
They are encouraged at schools during science fair competitions. Some science projects need more than one participant as each person is responsible for performing part of an experiment, for example.
Students with similar interests can collaborate to make a presentation. Both will benefit from each other's knowledge or approach.
I agree with Ian Kennedy .Every collaborative project, whatever level and nature it is, needs to be marked for proportionate collaboration to encourage maximum participation and discourage free writing.This will give everybody a purpose to collaborate.
All four responses thus far make reference to science education. The nature of collaborative research in education however makes is much more difficult to guard against free-riding, even when the work is divided between team members.
Reda Elmabruk In our paper, referenced higher above, we take it that the students assess confidentially the degree of co-operation experienced with the others in the group, and that this be combined in a specific way with the lecturer's assessment of the overall work. This stops free-riding.
I see your point Ian Kennedy , but students, at least in our culture, like to appease each other ("scratch my back scratch yours" sort of attitude) which brings us back to square one. Confidential peer-assessment may be made more stringent by requesting from each member a list of activities or tasks completed by other members. Then the supervisor can double check this by posing specific questions related to the work each members had completed. Doesn't all this make you feel like a detective though, forever looking for loopholes to plug?
Reda Elmabruk Like lightning, some students will always try to find the path of least resistance. This is why we would normalise each group's peer assessments, seeking out the differences and communalities in the peer ratings of collaboration before bring into account the group mark by the lecturer. (Normalised peer ratings of collaboration PROCESS moderate the lecturer's mark for the group PRODUCT.)
