I did nano indentation on coarse grained alpha + beta & one fine grained lamellar alpha + beta structure. But the hardness of coarser grained was found to be higher than the that of the finer structure. Beta phase which is supposed to be softer had higher hardness(in coarser structure) than that of the average hardness of the finer structure.
Lath size of finer grains:
length: 7.53 micron
diameter:1.13 micron
coarser grain size:
around 50-60 micron
Because of the increased surface area
and interference between particles
beta phase is more harder than alpha. if you anneal Ti in and obtain high amount of beta phase in it. then you will high nano-hardness value.

I think it is related to the effect of the volume of grain boundary on hardness.
