Big Data is another trend in the world of ICT which has implication for information management. In this regard,can libraries manage Big Data in term of its volume,velocity, and varieties? The amount of data in the world today has been exploding. How could libraries help in managing Big Data?
It depends how big it is.
Velocity is very important to know a data as big data.

I think the management of big data entails making meaningful information readily available to the decision makers- a vital element to business intelligence (BI) in organisations. Also some data might have very short lifetime to be useful. I therefore see the use of a data warehouse system (DWS)-which presents realtime vital information via a computer screens/ electronic dashboards to the management team is the best way of managing the big data. DWS is a central system integrating databases from various systems within the organisation, and presents cross-platform BI information. In addition, DWS has the archival capability which helps to compare the trend of various information over time. As, each organisation is unique, DWS unfortunately need to built and customised according to the needs of the organisation.
So, libraries could help by promoting the use of DWS or future libary management systems (LMS) could include DWS modules -to integrate with other systems within the organisation.
Considering the make of Big data, do we think it is something that can be managed by libraries?

However, this data is currently in proprietary formats understood only by the library community and is not easily reusable with other data stores or across the Web. This has necessitated that organizations like OCLC and major libraries around the world begin the work of exposing this data in ways that make it machine-accessible beyond the library world using commonly accepted standards.
