Design for Sustainability (DfS) is a wicked and complex problem. It needs the designer to combine specialized knowledge from several disciplines with systemic thinking. The designer also needs to integrate several stakeholders with different viewpoints, issues, interrelations, and interconnections. Also, the designer needs to make informed trade-offs.
The research question that we are pondering is: How can AI be used for enabling Design for Sustainability?
AI can be used to simplify the analyses needed to assess sustainability metrics fx. carbon footprint of an object. As performing full scope LCA is a complicated task, AI can speed up this process. This can help the designer to make more informed decisions, and also can allow to make much more alternative versions of their design - which then can be easily compared.
AI is used in precision irrigation and farming. This means less water is used for high production. Sesnsors are used to monitor the soil moisture in soil and when the soil is due for irrigation the water is released this contributes to sustainable development goal number six.

Given the fact that AI today is still limited to solving narrow and well-defined problems, I would suggest reformulating the question:
How can Design for Sustainability point at issues/problems/challenges/opportunities that can be improved by applying appropriate AI methods?
It could be a space/ecosystem/infrastructure between several players, and complex interactions between the players. What the designer should do is to point out selected narrow areas with improvement potential. These questions are problems for AI to solve.
But if you are planning to replace/help the designer by AI, I would start from traditional operations research. Operations research requires constructing a model of the system, and parameterizing&optimizing the constructed model could include elements of AI.
Great question, so I got obsessed to write my thoughts on it despite thin academic background!
You could use it for instance by training it analyzing flow-diagrams with valves that open and close to identify bottlenecks. This can then be applied to traffic networks to reduce chances of getting a traffic jam. This means that people get to their work more easily, so they spend less time on the road, which benefits air quality and quality of life in general.

As in any other application, need knolegnd.
In agriculture there are several applications in sectorized irrigation systems, or by demand for specific nutrients and all based on AI control systems. Saving water and improving food quality.
In industry, application of AI reduces costs and waste of raw materials, refuse, noise pollution, electricity, thermal energy and the use of fossil fuels.
There are so many examples, such as in industries that transform aluminum into packaging and beverage cans controlling minimum thickness and energy consumed, fabric cuts with maximum use of the area by geometry of garment, rubber industry for manufacturing tires with rigid control of material variation and environmental conditions to avoid scrap, truck transport route systems controlling trajectories, speed and fuel consumption, construction of geometric shapes more favorable to aerodynamics of aircraft landing gear, to obtain less drag and noise avoiding energy consumption and noise pollution, among many others.
