Managing Students with Behavioral Issues in the Class Room
Students with behavioral problems require sensitive yet firm attention. They are prone to over-stimulation and are easily upset over stressors that would be minor annoyances to other children and teacher. How to make sure to have a calm-down area in the classroom. How to provide a safe yet comforting atmosphere to allow students to find their balance. How teachers can carry on with the rest of the class even in the face of distractions.
I can only speak for my experience with college freshmen. Usually it is related to something outside the classroom, more likely their personal life. The best thing to do is to meet the student one on one if possible, preferably share a cup of tea or coffee in the campus commons and try to find more about the student’s personal life. That can have a calming effect. Sometimes the demands of a particularly challenging course or the subject matter causes serious anxiety in students and one should review how to study for the material with the student and also discuss time management. Sometimes a student just does not like you and that is a tougher situation to deal with
