Globally, the plant family Verbenaceae is believed to have more than 3000 species distributed in 70-80 genera according to the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea (Volume 5, 2006).
As per the The Plant List, I understand the Angiosperm family Verbenaceae includes 34 genera and 2,712 species of which only 1,035 are currently accepted.
But another paper reports that the family includes some 35 genera and around 1,200 species.(Folk Medicinal Uses of Verbenaceae Family Plants in Bangladesh

Many important genera, which in the past were thought to belong to Verbenaceae, in the last decades were transferred to Lamiaceae (Labiatae), e.g. Clerodendrum, Vitex, Tectona.
