I read certain metals will stabilizes the certain high temperature phases at room temperature.
for example, Ni, Co, Mn can stabilize the austenite at room temperature.
I want to know what is the metallurgy behind the stabilization of phases. say austenite and ferrite stabilizers
Actually there is a thermodynamic reason behind this. Hume- Rothery rules determines If two metals could form a solid solution (that is, these two will form the same crystal phase at all potential concentration of each species) e.g. Ni dissolves in austenite at all concentration. this dissolving changes the gibbs free energy curve of the austenite phase and consequently, it changes the phases stabilization.
Dear all, this is more precisely a doping process, where small amount of of the minor component is introduced to introduced good coherency between phases. The following book deals with details about the possible mechanisms. My Regards
