Understanding patient experience is a key step in moving toward patient-centered care. By looking at various aspects of patient experience, one can assess the extent to which patients are receiving care that is respectful of and responsive to individual patient preferences, needs and values. Evaluating patient experience along with other components such as effectiveness and safety of care is essential to providing a complete picture of health care quality.

Patient Experience Differs from Patient Satisfaction

The terms patient satisfaction and patient experience are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. To assess patient experience, one must find out from patients whether something that should happen in a health care setting (such as clear communication with a provider) actually happened or how often it happened.

Satisfaction, on the other hand, is about whether a patient’s expectations about a health encounter were met. Two people who receive the exact same care, but who have different expectations for how that care is supposed to be delivered, can give different satisfaction ratings because of their different expectations.

So studying patient experience and stisfaction  is important issues beside quality of care

Thank you, everyone.This is really great information -- I'm going to pull the resources you've suggested.

This public health clinic is comprised of inputs from three public health entities -- two public non-profits and our own public health department. In the U.S., public health is focused on addressing care needs for vulnerable populations. Because we do not have a single payer or government-run system, we fill gaps through non-profit and/or community-based programs that are typically focused on a geographic area.

We are really curious about how well these entities have (1) integrated care and (2) how patients' experiences of care have been affected by co-locating sources that are typically not found together: behavioral health, primary care, dental, and social services.

We are doing a qualitative analysis of patients experiences of care, primary data collection, as the outcome of most interest, which is why I asked the question. Now, I'm also curious about care integration...perhaps I should post that question separately.

We do not, within this grant, need to run an analysis of secondary data on a grand scale, but we plan to do so in a follow-up study.
