At the Monte Carlo casino, I saw an unusual advertising image. It rotated around a vertical axis and seemed suspended in the air; there was no screen behind it. The image was bright and colorful. Who knows how it works or has an idea how such a visual effect can be obtained?
Obviously I can't say for sure what you saw, but it sounds similar to HyperVsn. Google search them and check out their videos and see if that matches what you saw. On the other hand, perhaps not. HyperVsn isn't too mysterious, so you probably would have spotted how its done. They use rotor blades with a line of LEDs. The rotor blades spin at high speed so that you can't easily see them. This is particularly effective if the background is selected to blend with the rotors (especially, say, black on black) so that the spinning rotors are quite hard to see. They then time the lighting of the LEDs to create what is effectively an LED display floating in mid-air. Using all the tricks of perspective and motion the 2-D displayed object can appear very 3 dimensional and that illusion is enhanced by appearing in mid-air rather than on a visible 2 D screen.
Mike Albert, thanks for your reply. I read about the HyperVsn projection system. It seems very promising. Nevertheless, I have doubts that this is the system I saw in the Monte Carlo casino. These doubts are related to the following circumstances. The observer will not see the rapidly rotating fan blades, but should see its central part with the motor. However, I didn't see it. The image hung in the wall opening above the entrance to the game room. There was no special background behind the image (like black on black).
