Physically measuring depth of water in a borewell is very difficult. First we need to dissemble the cap of the borewell. Then we need to allow measuring tape inside borewell which is very tedious.
There are SONAR based technologies for this purpose. Based on the time required for sound waves to reflect from the water level, they determine the depth of water level.

Sonar based technologies for bore-water depth measurement is fairly accurate. They can give an accuracy of less than a cm. Usually in 10-25mm. But there are few conditions for these to work properly like the max depth of water column.
When it comes to monitoring of water levels, sonic technology may seem to be a good option, however, these pricey devices are not nearly as accurate because these equipment (Sonic technology ) is limited due to several different factors like-
o not all well casings are perfectly straight, and may result in a false reading.
o readings can also be affected by fractures in wells which result in cascading water in a well
o interference from roots/pumps/cables and other debris in the wells or boreholes can cause false readings
o sonic water level meters can only work on wells that have a diameter less than 10″
o only work to detect the surface of the water
When looking for the most accurate and cost effective way to measure water levels in bore wells. Tapes are far more reliable and accurate when it comes to measuring water levels in bore wells.
