Honors or HDR? - FAQS.TIPS

I have asked this question elsewhere and varied opinions keep flooding my thoughts. An honours year is considered a pathway to a Phd subject to a higher achievement during the honours year. How different is this from a masters by research apart from the years of study? Does an honours year prepare one enough to go into academia and research considering the duration of study?
