Hi everyone, I'm looking for some articles that discuss the historical importance of the LGBTQ community. I'm specifically looking for theory papers that talk about why a sense of connectedness to the LGBTQ community is so important for many LGBTQ individuals. I've been looking at papers in the areas of sociology and queer theory, but I'm interested in articles from any discipline. Thanks!

You probably already know these texts, but I would reread Judith Butler's 'classic' remarks on this, especially in Gender Trouble, Bodies that Matter and Undoing Gender, since this is where both theoretical work and historical contextualization takes place. Otherwise, one could also read again Sara Ahmed's Queer Phenomenology in relation to the question of theory and the linking of specific perspectives.
After a short research I came across Howard Chiang's "Global Encyclopedia of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) History" (2019) (3 volumes!) where you can surely find some useful information and sources.
Otherwise you could also search thematically, i.e. from Stonewall or even further back. One could also try to research LGBT+ museums or museums of sexual history, because in a certain respect a certain narrative has already been compiled here.
Basically, I believe that the question of historical relevance is most likely not one that exists per se, but one that must be justified from a certain point of view. That one can argue that it is relevant is beyond question for me, but many people can see it differently. Precisely for this reason, it seems to me more like a task to justify or argue why lgbt+ history should be considered relevant, where here are also relevancies for scientific theory formation, empirical research, etc.
