I think the Hippurate hydrolysis become poor test and give negative result because the strain become more tolerant of air after storage for long term or repated sub culture.

Campylobacter has a very unstable and hyper variable genome and can mutate very quickly. You may well have acquired a non-Hippurate utilising variant. We rarely use biochemical methods and rely more on molecular based typing
Campylobacter has variable gene lead to a certain mutations, Do not overlook this probability, may be this what happened with you, so you need more analysis.
