I'm trying to analyse NDVI dynamics for some mediterranean areas and I have noticed that in Sardinia and Corsica there is a peak of NDVI between December and January (see picture).
I felt that something was wrong with the script I'm using to dowload the images, because I'd expect NDVI maximun peak during spring (April-May-end of June). Indeed, that should be the period of maximum photosinthesis activity. But I tried also with raw Sentinel-2 data and I got the same results.
Is there someone that could give me some hits and share his experience? Thank you
It is unusual to observe a peak in NDVI during December-January in Mediterranean areas, as the winter season is generally characterized by lower temperatures and lower levels of photosynthesis. However, there could be several reasons for this observation, including weather patterns, vegetation type, and land use changes. One possibility is that the vegetation in Sardinia and Corsica includes winter-growing species, which have a peak in photosynthesis activity during the colder months. Another possibility is that the region experienced higher-than-normal rainfall or mild temperatures during this time, which could have boosted vegetation growth.
Are you using Surface Reflectance Level 2 S2 product and with cloud filters? Which year's data are you looking at? What are the agricultural practices there? I ran a median NDVI script in Google Earth Engine with cloud filter to see how the results look for Sardinia.
