Is the size, intelligence and / or beauty of animals belonging to particular species important in terms of our propensity to protect them?
Are species of larger, more intelligent or prettier (in common feeling) animals more protected than smaller, less intelligent, “less pretty” ones?
Are bigger, smarter, prettier animals more popular with us than smaller, less intelligent, less pretty ones?

Sounds you are to proceed and conduct one or more studies to answer the excellent questions you pose.
Difficult questions are beautiful. Certainly these are great topics for research, though not in my field. I only have certain feelings, intuitions and observations. I'm curious if others have them too.
As for Michael Uebel's reply, this may be one of the possible explanations of the part of the issue we are discussing. The very intriguing one. Thank you for recommending the article.
