I think that if one is teaching a course with an ethical component (such as peacemaking or environmental stewardship), it is imperative to force students to assess their own ethical presuppositions. However, if the course has no ethical component per se (such as calculus), then you can simply alert them to the definition of academic dishonesty and warn them of the severe consequences.

I think the instructor should follow the instruction of the university in the lecture.
