How to determine the specific surface area for one atomic layer and two atom layer of Graphite???
You can calculate just based bu the geometry of the graphite (graphene): it is composed of a honeycomb of carbon atoms, each hexagon side of 1.421 Å (C-C bond).
The area of an hexagon is 3*sqrt(3)/2*side2, with side 1.421 Å.
Each hexagon in the lattice contains 2 full carbon atoms (6 atoms, with a third of each inside the hexagon). So the area of the hexagon corresponds to two atoms.
Then you can just divide the area in the weight of the two atoms:
3*sqrt(3)/2*(1.421Å)2 ----> area of an hexagon
--------------------------------
2 atoms*12 amu/atom * 1.66e-27 kg/amu ------> weight of two atoms
[you can paste this in google: (3*sqrt(3)/2*(1.421Å)^2)/(2*12*1.66e-27*kg) ]
it gives you: 1 316 802.71 m2 / kg or 1317 m2/g of each side of a graphene layer
Then, one atomic layer has two sides, so specific surface area is 1317*2= 2633 m2/g
In two layer, only the outer ones are exposed and the weight is double, so specific surface area of two layers is again: 1317 m2/g
Here, the surface area contribution by the edges is neglected, which is reasonable for few and large graphene layers.
