In the United States, their is the illusion of academic freedom. I say illusion because even though we can teach pretty much what ever we want to as long as it relates to the subject of the course, there exists the monster of political correctness. Every deserves dignity. Everyone deserves to be treated fairly. However, in the United States political correctness has often been used as a tool to control speech and thus attempt to control thought. George Orwell was not to far off when he wrote 1984. To many academics (and most administrators) academic freedom and free speech is the opportunity to agree with them.
That is undeniable. For example, countries where English makes a difference when eting a job usually have a general background in most of their population. Additionally, since English serves for economic purposes and a common lingua Franca for communication, countries and politicians need to reinforce its learning.

Of course, we have an experience in North where the french speaking organization promote the use of the french language in university, despite of our conviction that english should be the first language.
Another experience with a cooperation with Germany, the German-Tunisian University was blocked for reasons of political relations
