If iron is deposited in the epithelium, but not copper, does that not mean that its source is not directly related to apoptosis but that it comes from a source other than cytochrome--like heme? Look at the capillary bed. What happens there? The trans-epithelial electrical potential might provide a clue: I believe increased calcium ion flux might increase that voltage, and leaking due to capillary damage might reduce it (measure the voltage between an endotracheal tube and a venous catheter).
