In time it probably will although at the moment there are other contenders like AMF (https://amf.wikispaces.com/) and 3MF (http://www.3mf.io/what-is-3mf/).

There are plans to add features like lattice structures to STEP as these lattice structures are more and more used as features of a product to make it lighter while at the same being optimised for strength using finite element analyses.

Advantages of AMF and 3MF are e.g. support for constellations.

Great informations! thank you! I Guess these new data format are not in conformance with STEP-NC (ISO 14649), which is the new bread of CAE chain.
