Once their medical issues have stabilised, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and occupational therapy are the three main types of rehabilitation sought by stroke victims. Given the scope of the project, it would seem an omission to not consider speech and language therapy.

Yes. I would agree with that. Since the SLP focuses more on socialization and all social action -- especially since it is so dependent on language and communication -- this group is a natural source of information, assistance, and rehabilitation. Progressively over the last 20 years or so, SLPs have demonstrated significant importance of Individuals with Aphasia creating various kinds of compensations to increase their socialization and communication despite the language and symbolic processing problems (see Nina Simmons-Mackie, Ray Wilkinson, Suzanne Beeke, Madeline Cruice, and my work to mention a few). Additionally, quality of life issues revolve significantly around communicative ability and socialization. PTs and OTs do excellent work but far less in the social and communicative relam than SLPs. The presence of motor aphasia after experiencing a stroke requires rehabilitation of the speech muscles as well as the skeleton. It is very important not to be in a hurry with speech recovery. Pathological speech occurs only on the same type of sound. Specialized logopedic rehabilitation is required.
yes, definitely. Language Therapy can have great impact on participation. With participation comes activity and thus: task-specifity, which is needed for all aspects of motor learning.

Yes Sonia, your question is right on point, and feeds into the motivation for undertaking the study. We also wanted to review the medical record the past decade to see the rehabilitation trends. which experts (Physio, speech language and hearing, nutrition and dietetics, nursing care) the patients were referred to by physicians following diagnosis inorder to inform whether the MDT was involved enough in CVA management.
Preliminary analysis is providing strong evidence to the 'suspected'. Less than a percentage of those patonising physiotherapy who had indication of related difficulty in speech and or hearing in their records/ history had been referred.

@Driss. Thank you very much for your interest. You are absolutely right. in fact the motive behind this study was to provide evidence for areas that need strengthening in the typical stroke management. Thus this is a form of preliminary research on which to build others. Also, at the time of this study, we did not have a speech therapist in the team and the servicewas not available in the hospital. Currently, we are undertaking a cohort study were speech therapy assessment has been included. Thank you for your question.
