We have combined open-ended questions with quantitative scales. Here's some examples:

I find it very useful, particularly when studying sensitive topics in not previously explored context. It helps you to make cross-cultural comparisons following standardized measures but at the same time contextualize findings based on the social-cultural factors.
In Mixed method the research project becomes comprehensive and creative, becuase the emprical data are supported with a valid descriptions or write ups from unit and thematic analysis. Using mixed method the researcher should consider the purpose or reason of the qualitative side either get the essence , structures, theory from these appropriating qualitative research design is crucial.
I used mixed method once in one of my articles (see link below). Mixing up quant and qual methods properly would harmonize your tune and help you deliver more insightful and confident conclusions.

I have found mixed methods research design very useful as it provides for triangulation. Depending on your research questions, it also helps you to address the 'how and why' and not just the 'what'.
However using mixed methods usually requires more time and resources than other designs. It also requires the expertise to use it. It is important to understand that just using both quantitative and qualitative research methods does not make the design 'mixed methods' - there must be clear data linkage to address the research questions.
