In Ireland the Taskforce on nurse staffing and skill mix is using "trendcare" to assist in identifying missed care, we also use an EWS to identify escalation in deterioration for the patient. I wonder if you have experience of these being used in the UK and what are the benefits if any of there use in care.
Conflict of interest - I'm involved in the evaluation of the Irish work...
i) EWS Lots of Trusts using EWS scores for escalation with broadly positive experiences although I suspect there is variation. Some evidence showing reduced mortality when an EWS based observation/response protocol was introduced & tied with electronic recording of vital signs (and therefore automated calculation)
ii) Trendcare no direct experience (although it is used in the UK in a couple of Trusts) seems like a promising system but I feel that there is quite a lot we don't yet know - reporting and recording is one thing but action is the important bit... following on from that we don't really know how sensitive/specific nurses reports of missed care are for triggering actions...
