Some changes following administration of Histidine-Tryptophan-Ketoglutarate (HTK) Custodiol including Anemia and hyponatremia are not uncommon in our cardiac patients. However we have noticed degrees of hematuria in our patients who have received Custodiol Bretschneider solution). Although wasting of the cardioplegic solution was effective in some patients, my last patient had hematuria on the contrary to the wasting of the solution. I didn't find any report in the literature. Please share your ideas about the reason and possible solutions.

Good to hear you. We have never used custodiol (we use universally blood cardoplegia) , but to my knowledge I am not ware of any such complication. I am not sure if I understand the case correctly but I would expect that hematuria would more easily be explained from heparin or other ECC related coagulation problems as dilution or secondary to bladder catherisation; of course you have thought of this; you could as well think of posting your question on EACTA Linked In blog (via the website)

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have had 8 cases who received Custodiol and 5 cases with degrees of hematuria. I'd like to emphasize that hematuria was more severe in first three cases.
We have used Custodiol in 5-10 cases/year for several years and we have never had cases of hematuria.
