We are planning to start a project on extended reality technology in an EFL environment. We are curious about other researchers' experiences/opinions about the issue.
Have you ever tried extended reality technology in an EFL environment?
We need qualified and experienced teaching faculty members for effective and successful implementation of XRT, but it is not easy to find such qualified and experienced staff at a large scale. Applying XRT is undoubtedly an effective way of teaching in ELT and EFL classes if qualified and experienced teachers are available; otherwise, it will be just a waste of time, energy and resources.
Immersing players in the action by putting a screen (a smartphone display or headgear) directly in front of their eyes (VR) is one example, as is placing game characters in real-world settings, as in the popular Pokémon Go game (AR). In the game industry, virtual reality is taking momentum.
Extended reality (XR) refers to any real-and-virtual mixed environments and human-machine interactions formed by computer technology and wearables, with the 'X' representing a variable for any current or future spatial computing technologies.
Great topic! I have tried projecting Google Maps' Street View in a class and using it for practicing directions to tourist guides in formation and I can say that this easy activity fosters motivation in a significant way.
VR and AR in education or in EFL? Many research conducted regarding both but from my experience with VR devices is quite heavy, expensive and extended use can cause headaches and neck pain for students.
We had some support from a chinese compangy to complete our research, otherwise tbe devices cost extremely high at the moment, esp the good devices.
I believe the best learning taking place via XR/VR/AR are still environments such as VR chat, where 'wanting to exist' in the online space takes precedent over 'wanting to learn'.
People use this as a tool for engaged communication, and we all know how learning naturally sprouts from this.
Same applies to EFL learners. AR would allow you to instantly summon into reality the concepts you are trying to communicate to your students, or allow them to communicate in the best way they see fit.
Definitely still an early development regarding most AR.
