After African states obtained their independence, the artificial and poorly demarcated borders of many countries were considered the most potent source of conflict and political instability. This resulted in heated debates on whether to revise or maintain the colonial borders, hence the research question seeks to explore the effectiveness of the African Union in resolving ethnic border conflicts and how it can be an effective tool towards resolving the aforementioned conflicts. Furthermore, what can be improved as well as new measures which can be implemented to curb these conflicts?
About constant occurrences of violent conflicts fueled by ethnic and religious differences in the postcolonial period can it is said that nation-building has not been fully achieved in some countries and that it still is a necessary initiative. For nation-building to be relevant, it should generate African unity while enabling diverse communities to thrive. The nation-building and peace-building processes are contingent, a lengthy, historical process whose success is not in advance insured.

Indeed, the word "ethnic" appears only once in the document, specifically in an opening statement expressing hope for understanding among the African Union's peoples and cooperation among its states in a larger unity transcending ethnic and national differences. Short of amending the Charter with the assent of the member states, should one blame the African Union for neglecting a problem it was not intended to address?
