Spouses’ Cortisol Associations and Moderators: Testing Physiological Synchrony and Connectedness in Everyday Life

Results indicated that husbands’ cortisol levels were higher at moments they reported feeling lonelier and lower at moments they were in the presence of their spouse. Wives’ cortisol levels were higher at moments they were alone. In addition, wife-husband cortisol synchrony was stronger for husbands who spent relatively more time with their spouse across the study period—even after accounting for time spent with others in general. These findings suggest that marital partners evidence positive within-couple cortisol associations, and that connectedness (particularly physical closeness) may underpin spouses’ physiological synchrony.

Abstract

The concept of "arousal" or "activation" serves to break down the distinction between drives (motives) and emotion. It stresses the continuum of arousal in the organism and justifies the conception of a responsive or unresponsive organism rather than responsive or unresponsive segments of behavior. It is hypothesized that the relationship between activation and quality of performance is represented by an inverted U-shaped curve. 40 references.

Thanks James, that is interesting. However I'm mainly interested in what synchrony in skin condutance between a couple relates to. Most of the studies concern only (pseudo)clients and listeners/therapists, and Gottman's work with skin conductance synchrony in couples is from the 80s.
