Thank you everyone for sharing your information. It seems the most popular data source is boardex. However, looking at that data I have come to realize that the information is spotty and many observations leave the nationality as an unknown. I am looking specifically at foreign nationals on the board of directors and the impact this has on cross boarder acquisitions in general as well as when the target is in the country of the foreign director. Other moderators I will model are institutional differences between acquirer and target nations.

I have not visited this site for a while and hence this belated response now.

1) Your question intrigues me -- I am wondering if you have made any progress with your research.

2) Taking an intellectually provocative stand, I must say that implicit in your query is the non-articulated assumption that certain nationalities are better in some way in managing an enterprise. That said, what is the dependent variable you have in mind?

3) I have had a number of students who did their Master's thesis under my guidance and I can say that nationality does not matter… some are bad, some mediocre and some excellent whatever their nationality. I had a student who looked at M&A by Indian firms in the developed economies. By and large these firms were successful. But, now consider M&A by western firms -- many of the acquisitions have led to decrease in share-holder value while others just stagnated. Now consider Chinese, French, German, Italians, Japanese, Koreans, Swiss firms -- many are successful in increasing share-holder value while many have, despite high rewards, just failed, and even spectacularly. So, the question I pose to you is: what kind of dependent variable are you examining or planning to examine?

4) Finally, I think what might be useful is to examine the backgrounds of these CEO’s directors – they can be revealing. If interested, I am willing to cooperate in such a study.
