Bivalves from the same Genus which may have been confused through review papers. G. glycymeris inhabits Atlantic waters, can it really be found in the Mediterranean?
Glycemaris pilosa has 6 varieties some of them coming from the Mediterranean Sea. Please consult - Nolf F. & Swinnen F. (2013) The Glycymerididae (Mollusca: Bivalvia) of the NE Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. Neptunea 12(3): 1-35
Dear Ariadna, in "Huber, M. (2010). Compendium of bivalves.ConchBooks. 901 pp" both species are considered to be present in the Mediterranean. Huber wrote: "The European G. glycymeris and pilosa are distinct as well and could even be attributed to distinct subgenera, due to their distinct ligament position".
S. Gofas et al., in their book Moluscos marinos de Andalucia (2011), consider both names as synonyms. It seems to vary much between authors. Worms recognise it as a separate species.
Looking at molecular data, there are only two 16S sequences (very short, 250bp) for both species. Aligning them bring two differences (less than 1%). Not sufficient to answer clearly.... Adding more data would certainly help.
In Tebble 1976, we can read : "It is distributed from the Norwegian Sea and the Baltic to the Iberian Peninsula, the Mediterranean, the Atlantic coast of Morocco to Madeira and the Canary Is."
