Anyone linked the hepatocellular carcinoma with cmv?
We had a patient that came in initially with the neuro immune dysfunctional syndrome, later pre-scheduled appointment for the pet-scan revealed the patient inflicted with the hepatocellular carcinoma. We already had the viral serology reflect the high numbers on cmv rooted infection.

Did your patient have cirrhosis with an HCC? and is the dignaosis of HCC biopsy proven? i ask since conventional PET is poor at detecting HCC and some other neoplastic process may be responsible for the PET-avid lesion. Increased CMV prevlance has been noted in patients with HCC (see the earlier article reccomended by Dr Schnider). Cirrhosis is also associated with reactivation of the virus (Tanaka et al Hepatology 1992) and is responsible for an increased suspectbility to CMV infection de novo. So while a correlation between CMV and cirrhosis +/- HCC exists, there is no convincing data that I am aware of which links causality.
