I know that this is one of the forms of violence against women and I am interested in this particular topics as a possible area of research for my studies.
I can recommend the following article although it focused on migrants. Here is the title: ‘It’s only a tradition’: making sense of eradication interventions and the persistence of female ‘circumcision’ within a Swedish context" by Beth Maina Ahlberg, Ingela Krantz, Gunilla Lindmark and Marian Warsame in Critical Social Policy 2004 24: 50
Please have a look at Dr. Berggren's thesis from Karolinska - "Studies on primary and repeat female genital cutting". And also "Berggren V MAS, Hernlund Y, Johansson E, Habbani B, Edberg A-K. Being Victims or Beneficiaries? Perspectives on Female Genital Cutting and Reinfibulation in Sudan. African Journal of Reproductive Health. 2006;10(2):24 - 36.
My colleague Dr Katherine Brown of Coventry University has done some excellent work on FGM and is currently working on a large European project on this topic. You can contact her via our website: www.coventry.ac.uk/hli
Have a look at the conference proceedings for the Psychology of Women Section that ran in July 2012 (should be able to find it on Google). I attended and there were a number of researchers presenting in the area. Their research may not have been published as of yet but I'm sure they wouldn't mind you contacting them! Good luck!
I believe Dr. Jillian Einstein's team at the University of Toronto has done qualitative research on FGM. Not sure if any of the research has been published yet.
We have recently carried out a qualitative study of community and professional education on FGM and will hopefully write it up for publication in the autumn.
Look at the article by Peggy Mulongo on psychological effects
