I did come across some local research or thesis from students during my teaching stint at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines, and recalling their conclusions or observation seem to suggest that it still lacks substance if not credibility.   The Philippines, a country that is predominantly Christian and of which the majority follow Catholicism is one good subject to consider - but thread carefully if one considers one self as Filipino. The travel books says it all - "Philippines, a country that evolve from more than 300 years in a Convent and 50 years in Hollywood...." I'll just surmise my observations post 1986 - post Marcos-Martial Law period....Though the Philippine Constitution clearly amplifies the separation of "Church and State", the periods before what Filipinos call as  the First People Power Revolution and the other people revolutions that followed after will show the growing and glowing influence of the Church, both Christian and Catholic.  Even these days...The CBCP - Catholic Bishops Congress of the Philippines will issue "letters" or "encyclicals" that are read out during the homily, guiding as they preach to what is the "greater good" for Filipinos without necessarily referring to a concerned person/government.  Our language, "like the english language" must be understood ..especially the "fine print", since there are cryptic messages or knowledge...which when taken lightly can be very misleading... like the Tagalog words, it can mean or made to mean many things....There would be news items both in print and the TV where politicians are often meeting leaders of the Christian Church or attending masses officiated by the Archbishop of Manila.  The news alone and the editorial commentaries that go with it will show that the future or running candidates would look good to the voting public if seen with various church leaders of any denomination, be it Christian or Catholic.  

My observation can be seen simply as a conjecture..., with the strong influence that any Church can excel, i am doubtful that any serious or in-depth research will tend to suggest on insinuate that the Church does influence the political scenario in the Philippines.  Just take the projected 2016 Presidential elections, many candidates are in the news attending services specially meeting of the influential INC-"Iglesia ni Cristo" a group that is often suggested to "vote as a block" under the "spiritual guidance of its "Pastor".  Many elections are won by candidates who seem to have the blessings of such religious leaders.  There's no need for a political party since as quoted in the Bible, "give what is due to Ceasar, and give what is due to God" - a true manifesto for the "separation of Church and State".

If we are to consider the political structure of the Philippines, i am not aware that there are 'obvious" political parties with the name-sake e.g. "Christian Democrat" parties prevalent in other countries especially Europe.

However, in the Philippines, one's faith/religion, can guarantee allegiance and support and it can break or make the passage of laws regardless of the universality or objective nature or the law...take the "Reproductive Health Bill"... some Catholic male lawmakers initially had to be "incognito" and it was the women who were in the forefront to see that this Bill passed into law.  Watching them on TV, you just need to see the body language of the proponents that there seem to be an external pressure from the Church that they also needed to be watchful and careful of the language they use to defend the stature of this health bill.

it will be a big challenge to undertake an independent scientific research to prove such influence since respondents  will either feel the "wrath" if not the "damnation of hell" by simply entertaining such thoughts that may go against the teachings of the Church.  "Conscience," though non-scientific, and as taught by Christianity and Catholicism, is the guiding principle among Filipinos. - so making scientific and rational conclusions outside of these teachings can be considered as a dreaded or dreadful act.

So, if you really need an actual scenario of the influence of Catholic ideology on a country's politics...try and follow the trends of the forthcoming 2016 Presidential elections.  As we often say in the Philippines, 'It's not what you know but it's who you know that can make or break your future in the Philippines...particularly in politics... Just trend with any social network and one will see how faith and politics work in the Philippines... I hope i was able to contribute a little to your research..

It might be interesting to look at the influence of Liberation Theology on various social movements. Phillip Berryman's book Liberation Theology (1987) is a very good introduction to the topic.

Interesting Herbert's answer. Because Catholicism is not an ideology, but a religion. The aim of Catholic message is not political but transcendent. But inside catholicosm. There are a few movements (as theology of liberation) that treated to change the spiritual message into a political one.
