Could it be that you forgot to install CAN tools? If so run the following after updating and upgrading your system:

$ sudo apt-get install can-utils

Don't forget to reboot your system once the installation is complete.

Thanks Firas Khalil Khana , but the problem is with setting the interface up.

CAN interface is not visible when checking with ifconfig.

Also, I am running AGL on Raspberry Pi so apt repository is not available but can-utils are preinstalled on AGL.

Did you enable the mcp2515 and bcm2835 spi overlays in your /boot/config.txt?

Are you able to set the CAN interface using ip (as root)?

$ ip link set can0 up

Yes I have enabled spi overlays in the boot/config.txt which I have mentioned in my question.

And,$ ip link set can0 up does not work as can0 is not found.

Are you also using the same hardware ?

You mentioned that you've enabled spi in your /boot/config.txt, so I presumed that you only added the following:

dtparam=spi=on

without adding the mcp2515 and bcm2835 spi overlays:

dtoverlay=mcp2515-can0,oscillator=8000000,interrupt=12

dtoverlay=spi-bcm2835-overlay

or

dtoverlay=mcp2515-can0,oscillator=16000000,interrupt=25

dtoverlay=spi-bcm2835-overlay

so I had to double check that you actually added these overlays as well.

Hmm that's weird, then the problem has to either be from the circuit itself or from the kernel configuration.

I'd recommend that you check if the device is actually listed by running:

ls /sys/bus/spi/devices

If not then it's possible that your kernel configuration has the

"CONFIG_CAN_MCP251X"

option disabled:

"CONFIG_CAN_MCP251X is not set"

when it should either be enabled as a loadable module:

"CONFIG_CAN_MCP251X=m"

or built directly into the kernel itself:

"CONFIG_CAN_MCP251X=y"

The same applies for the BCM283x module.

I am using Linux for 10 years and saying just using Linux Today is like saying I drive electric car or using Raspery Pi, it has few versions and you can install a lot of Linux Versions on it, Arch, Fedora, Ubuntu and Suse maybe. Linux is very general term in the future I suggest provide Linux Version and Kernel.

Funny story, i'm facing a similar problem :

I did mount a PiCAN2 module on a raspberry pi and did activate the spi though config.txt file. But the device keeps saying me "Cannot find device can0".

I already checked the overlays in config.txt file.

ls /sys/bus/spi/devices returns

spi 0.0 spi 0.1

The SPI is already activated in the raspi-config. Honestly, for now, I don't see what I'm missing.

Okay, turns out it was a simple typo !

Check out the frequency : it should be 16000000(6 zeros) and not 160000000(7 zeros)
