Development refers to the increment in functions (motoric ability, inteligence, the ability to perform new tasks ecc).

Growth – increase in size, change in body composition and physique – in some individuals growth in height will continue, albeit slightly, into the early 20s.

Maturation – progress towards the mature state – varies with system; indicators of maturity status at the time of observation (skeletal age, stage of puberty, level of early motor development among infants, etc.); indicators of maturity timing (age at peak height velocity, age at menarche, age at walking, etc.) – most in the sport sciences confuse status and timing. Predicted maturity offset and in turn age at PHV, although widely applied, has too many problems as shown in several validation studies. Percentage of predicted adult height at the time of observations is a satisfactory indicator of maturity status.

Development – often confused with maturation – according to professor malina's perspective, development refers to learning the behaviors (social, cognitive, emotional, moral, etc.) of the culture within which the youngster is raised; behavioral development continues from infancy into and through adulthood.
