I want to design a system that supplies load battery through PV alone but if the PV is insufficient the grid should come in so as to supplement the power requirements by also maintaining constant d.c bus voltage. Please, how can I design such a system with simulink?

You can do it easily by creating this power topology:
- The PV system is conditioned with DC/DC boost converter supplying the maximum available solar power to the DC bus via MPPT technique (the control reference is current).
- The grid is connected to the DC bus with two-level three-phase inverter/charger and controlled to maintain the DC bus at the desired level, typically the same as batteries voltage (the control reference is voltage).
- The batteries are connected directly to the DC bus (usually, they are mounted in series so the total voltage matches with the voltage of DC link)
- The DC load is connected directly to the DC bus.
- The AC load is connected to the DC bus by mean of DC/AC converter controlled to supply constant voltage (the control reference is voltage).
With such power and control topologies, the grid will cover – automatically – the power difference between supplied solar power and the power demand from AC and DC loads.

Generally, PV systems are controlled to supply their maximum available power using MPPT technique, for doing so, a power (or current) reference is to be sent to the power converter (usually DC/DC boost). this reference is obtained thanks to a MPPT algorithm which depends highly on real-time measurements of solar irradiation and temperature
